The Minnesota Wild have 11 unrestricted free agents.
Wild General Manager Chuck Fletcher and head coach Mike Yeo have a decision to make on all the free agents.
The Wild currently have 31 players under contract for next season; each team is allowed a maximum of 50.
With the 19 remaining contracts, at least one will be used on drafted players that have expiring rights this summer. Also, there is cap space to try and lure a big name free agent or two to Minnesota.
Here is unrestricted free agent right wing Jed Ortmeyer.
Number – 41; Height – 6-0; Weight – 200; Hometown – Omaha, Nebraska; 2011-12 Salary – $585,000.
Statistics: 35 games played, one goal, one assist, minus-eight rating and 14 penalty minutes (Minnesota Wild); 34 games played, eight goals, 10 assists, plus-10 rating and 32 penalty minutes (Houston Aeros).
Strength: He is a solid defender with good size. He has strong board play and provides energy.
Weakness: He provides little to no offense. He is not a physical player.
Outlook: He is a depth, grinder type of player. The Wild needed him to provide some with the handful of devastating injuries it dealt with last season. He did that and did exactly what you expect from him. He got on in the ice in a fourth line role; fore checked hard, played defense and got off the ice. At 33-years-old with a history of injuries and a blood condition that makes him prone to clotting, he should be nearing the end of his hockey playing career. I do not think he will be re-signed.
