The Minnesota Wild have 14 restricted free agents.
Wild General Manager Chuck Fletcher and head coach Mike Yeo have a decision to make on all the free agents.
The Wild currently have 31 players under contract for next season; each team is allowed a maximum of 50.
With the 19 remaining contracts, at least one will be used on drafted players that have expiring rights this summer. Also, there is cap space to try and lure a big name free agent or two to Minnesota.
Here is restricted free agent right wing Nick Palmieri.
Number – 17; Height – 6-3; Weight – 220; Hometown – Utica, New York; 2011-12 Salary – $525,000. Qualifying Offer – $577,500.
Statistics: nine games played, minus-three rating and two penalty minutes (Minnesota Wild); 13 games played, three goals, three assists, minus-five rating and eight penalty minutes (Houston Aeros); 25 games played, five goals, six assists, zero rating and 24 penalty minutes (Albany Devils).
Strengths: He has good size and skating ability. He has secondary, scoring line skills and the potential to be a very good power forward. He is not afraid of contact. He has a good shot and quick release.
Weaknesses: He will be physical, but it is not nearly enough. He needs to go to the front of the net and create havoc for the opposing goaltender more often.
Outlook: Besides the draft picks, he was the main part of the trade that sent Marek Zidlicky to the New Jersey Devils in late February. The Wild expected more from after the trade, but it is hard to imagine he will not receive a qualifying offer. He is still young and loaded with potential.
