The Minnesota Wild fell short in a comeback attempt before falling short to the Chicago Blackhawks 5-3 Tuesday at the United Center.

Niklas Backstrom lasted just one period. He was having a pretty good game for about 13 minutes and everything fell apart. He stopped 14 of 17 shots, but was caught too deep in his net and struggled to control rebounds as the Blackhawks built a 4-1 lead after one period.

The Wild (11-9-2) picked its play up in the second and third periods, but dug itself too big a hole to get back into the game.

Ryan Suter got the Wild within two early in the third period with a blistering slap shot from the point on the power play through traffic and past Corey Crawford.

Kyle Brodziak made the game interesting with nine minutes and 28 seconds remaining by knocking a rebound on backdoor into the open net. The puck bound behind Crawford and Brodziak reached around the net to poke the puck across the goal line.

However, the Blackhawks answered one minute and one second later as Patrick Kane rifled a rebound over Darcy Kuemper's shoulder.

The Blackhawks (20-0-3) scored its four goals in the first period within a four minute and 59 second span.

Despite getting thoroughly outplayed in the first period, the Wild had a 1-0 lead eight minutes and 22 seconds into the first period when Devin Setoguchi knocked a loose puck in the crease into the net. Matt Cullen and Jason Zucker worked a nice passing play that set Setoguchi up in front of the net.
