Despite giving up the first goal of the game, the Wild dominated the early part of the game. However, the game turned completely around through the second and early portions of the third period before the Flames left the Scotiabank Saddledome with a 3-1 win Saturday.
Mike Yeo said after the game that he felt the momentum really started to shift during the first period.
Matt Stajan broke a 1-1 tie seven minutes into the third period by tucking a loose puck under the left pad of Niklas Backstrom on the heels of the Flames dominating play.
Stajan later added his second goal of the game with an empty-net tally from center ice. He had the opportunity to score the goal following a questioned non-icing call.
Ryan Suter went back to touch up and swept the puck around the boards thinking an icing whistle was coming. While he was chasing the puck, Suter did not see the linesman waving off the icing.
The Flames (6-7-3) opened the scoring at the 1:40 mark of the first period when Alex Tanguay got behind the Wild defense and roofed a wrist shot off a deke to his forehand. The Wild defense got caught watching the puck seconds after Dany Heatley missed Mikko Koivu on a saucer pass off a 2-on-1 rush.
Charlie Coyle scored the Wild's lone goal by redirecting a cross-ice pass from Pierre-Marc Bouchard into the net behind Joey MacDonald to tie the game near the midway mark of the first period.
The Wild (8-7-2) get another chance at the Flames Tuesday at the Xcel Energy Center.
