Wild open road trip with win
The Minnesota Wild held off a late surge to defeat the Anaheim Ducks 5-3 Sunday at the Honda Center.
Nick Johnson broke a 3-3 tie with five minutes and 11 seconds remaining in the game to get the Wild a win in the first game of a five-game road trip.
Cal Clutterbuck just threw the puck to the front of the net and hit Johnson’s skate before it went into the net. Clutterbuck later sealed the victory with his eighth goal of the season and fourth shorthanded with an empty net tap-in with just over 10 seconds remaining.
The Ducks (7-14-5) controlled pretty much all of the third period taking 14 of 27 shots in the final 20 minutes.
Josh Harding challenged the Ducks shooters and turned most of those shots into harmless saves.
The Wild (17-7-3) outshot the Ducks 17-9 in the first period, but still trailed 2-1.
It took a 5-on-3 power play goal by Dany Heatley with 3.2 seconds remaining in the opening period to get the Wild in the locker room down by only one. With the two-man advantage, the Wild worked the puck around before Heatley blasted a slap shot over the blocker of Jonas Hiller.
The second line of Matt Cullen, Pierre-Marc Bouchard and Casey Wellman turned the game in the Wild’s favor with a pair of goals in a 32-second span.
Wellman scored first to tie the game at 2-2 by redirecting Cullen’s pass across into the open net. Bouchard quickly responded with a backhand shot that got over Hiller’s glove.
