Mikko Koivu chose the perfect time to break out of his scoring drought.

The Minnesota Wild captain entered Thursday’s game against the Detroit Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena on a 19-game scoreless streak. His last goal came on March 20 of last season against the Montreal Canadiens.

He broke the streak by deflecting a shot at the point by Justin Falk, who took a pass at the point from Devin Setoguchi.

Setoguchi later won the game with a power play goal, but Koivu made the play.

Koivu chased a puck down in the corner and shook off a check from Niklas Kronwall to create a 4-on-2 advantage in front of the net and slid a pass to Setoguchi who banged in his own rebound.

The Wild (5-3-3) fell behind early on a redirection by Niklas Lidstrom early in the first period. The Red Wings absolutely dominated the early, which led to a 12-4 shot advantage at the end of one.

Wild goaltender Josh Harding continued his strong play against the Red Wings with 36 saves, including five in overtime and several beauties to keep the Wild down by just one goal.

Falk was a healthy scratch the first seven games of the season before Greg Zanon was injured, but has been one of the better defensemen for the Wild over the last few games. The Wild coaching staff will have a tough decision to make when the two injured defensemen return.

Red Wing goaltender Jimmy Howard nearly out-did Harding with several phenomenal saves through the latter half of the game, including a backdoor glove save on Koivu during a 5-on-3 Wild power play.

The Red Wings (5-4-1) have now lost five straight games and fallen to 11th in the Western Conference (two points behind the Wild, who are 6th).
